The next generation 2011 Dodge Durango is already causing quite a buzz in the auto industry with the newest photos recently released.  Fast lines and a slick interior is what Dodge is using to describe its new look.  Many are saying that the new Durango will rival the Grand Cherokee, with three rows of seating space available in this performance SUV.

The Durango was introduced in 1998 and had its first real redesign in 2004. In 2009, the model was discontinued, making the debut of the 2011 version even more exciting.  Dodge is keeping mum on the details of the Durango’s new look and performance capabilities, releasing only small bits of information to the media.    The expected models to be announced from Dodge include the Durango Crew, Express, Heat, Boulevard, and RT.  All are expected to be available in both 4×2 and 4×4 versions.

Seating configurations will be for five or seven passengers. The front passenger seat can be folded flat, the second row will have a 60/40 fold and tumble seat, and the third row seat will include headrests that can be lowered by the driver for a better rear view.

Mopar will build only 500 of these models, available only in Brilliant Black paint with a choice of three different stripe colors: Mopar Blue, Red or Silver. Interior stitching on the steering wheel and seats will match the exterior stripe color.

Ralph Gilles is genuinely thrilled with the new buzz the Fiat has created to rescue Chrysler. Gilles is excited for the Dodge brand and the new direction it’s headed. Among the most significant changes now there are 100,000-plus fans on Facebook for Dodge. To many, that figure may be nowhere near as important as the divorcing of Ram into its own sub-brand, but Gilles notes there was virtually no social media presence for Dodge just months ago. Brash moves like the Challenger commercials during the World Cup are also harbingers of what we’re likely to see from Dodge, Gilles says.

Questions about the nuts-and-bolts developments like the horsepower rating of the Pentastar V6 in the new Challenger, the continuation of the Durango name and the possibility of a new Viper were not really anwered by Gilles. However, the interview was an encouraging chat for anyone concerned with the future of Dodge. Gilles seems genuinely enthusiastic about the different directions Dodge is going to get its brand engaging with fans and customers. There’s an apparel line that’s done surprisingly well, a new NASCAR Challenger, more grassroots focus and it all means that you should expect to see Dodge popping up in unexpected places. The most important, and perhaps still unexpected place you’ll see Dodge up soon is the auto show stand. Dodge and parent Chrysler are set to introduce a slew of new models in the coming months.

Then I drove home the 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan and the image I had of myself was shattered.  In fact, it made me want to go rent a family and drive them around.  I weirdly had fantasies of picking the kids up from soccer practice and school.  This is not because my ‘cool’ factor is lessened; it is because the Grand Caravan is not your mother’s Mini Van.  It is cute, roomy, comfortable and HIP!!!
I had just got back from a trip and came directly into work from the airport and still had my luggage.  As much as I’d like to think I pack responsibly, for some reason this short little trip left me with 3 huge suitcases.  They didn’t make a dent in the roominess in the rear, where the third row seat is neatly tucked away.  In fact, I could have put 8 more suitcases, a tent, a cooler, a BBQ…you get the idea.
The look of the Grand Caravan has changed.  It is more sleek and endearing.   The angles are more aggressive, the chrome is shinier and the inside is amazing.   The first thing I noticed was how much leg room I had and how when I held on to the wheel, I felt like I was driving a bus.  There is so much room in the center section that I could truly have a little party, complete with a stow away table to set our drinks and food.

The ride was incredibly smooth and handled beautifully it the wacky Northwest spring weather.  During the 20 mile drive into the city, I experienced a massive rain storm, followed by a huge hail downpour, followed by completely sunny skies.  I have never felt more secure or safe then driving through it all in the Caravan.  I was actually surprised by how easy the drive was, at one point I looked down at the speedometer thinking I was doing 60 and I was actually going 80.  Hopefully my boss isn’t reading this and I don’t condone it, keep in mind the kids in the back seat were fictional.

I went to college in Ellensburg where every other car on the road was a huge truck.  It was essential in the day to day life of this farming community.  I went back a couple of weeks ago and I’m proud to say that there were Dodge Rams galore.  If I would have played slug bug with the Ram brand, my passenger would have been bruised.  These rigs are nothing like the trucks I used to see all of the time during school, frankly they’re sexy.

It can pull your heaviest load, fit Fido and the family comfortably in its cab and on the outside look sleek yet manly and rugged.  I’ve already made it clear in previous blogs that it is my opinion that the designers at Dodge are ingenious when it comes to making use of every inch of space and this heavy duty truck is no exception.  There are 42 cubbies to store your things.  I told you about the Dodge Caliber having a fridge in the multi level glove compartment; this rig has an ice box in the floor!!!!  Like I said, it’s the little things that get me excited.

The Dodge Ram recently won the coveted Motor Trend Truck of the Year.  What the Grammies is to the music industry, this is the equivalent in the auto industry.  Motor Trend considered several factors that the Dodge Ram had to offer including its 17,500-pound towing capacity, a passenger cabin they called “the best in its class,” and how easy the big Ram is to drive even when towing.

And finally, when I opened my email today, there was a new message about  ANOTHER award handed to the Dodge Ram.  AutoPacific announced its 14th annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSA), naming the all-new 2010 Ram Heavy Duty its top Heavy Duty Pickup.

The VSAs are what the people like and how satisfied they are with the Dodge Ram owner experience.  The winners perform well in 48 separate categories that objectively measure the ownership experience.

Last week I drove a 2008 stone white Dodge Caliber that had just a little over 38,000 miles on it.  The previous Seattle Dodge owner traded it in for a brand spanking new Dodge Nitro and I was pretty glad he did because it gave me a chance to take it for a spin.

Lately, I have been driving larger cars like the Jeep Liberty and the Dodge Grand Caravan and I am a owner of a very old SUV so it took me a little while getting used to being so low to the ground.  The ride was incredibly smooth because Dodge incorporates Electronic Stability Program(ESP).  This is designed to assist drivers in maintaining control of their vehicle during extreme steering maneuvers. ESP senses when a vehicle is starting to spin (oversteer) or plow (understeer), and attempts to correct the vehicle’s course by automatically controlling the throttle and applying the brakes at individual wheels.
This is a hatchback, but don’t let the hatchback term fool you though.  This sporty 5 door beauty has insane amounts of room.  The engineers at Dodge are ingenious when it comes to use of space.  The rear seats fold forward to 60/40 and the front passenger seat folds completely flat.  It was moving day for me and what that meant was this roomy ride fit A LOT more than my SUV.
It’s the little things that count to me and my all time favorite feature of this car is that it has a refrigerator in the glove box.  That’s right, a fridge.  You rarely see me without a water bottle in hand and it has a cubby to store drinks inside the glove box.  How cool is that?

The cup holders in the center console for said water are also lit up a techno shade of blue which also added pizzazz to the feel of the interior.

The center console slides forward to make room for drinks and it has a convenient place to put your cell phone.  If you carry a purse, you understand how convenient this is.  I don’t care how small or large my bag is, my phone will always get lost in it.

I wanted to test the get up and go of this used Dodge Caliber and so I took it up Capitol Hill in Seattle.  Zippity Zip!  This 162 HP handled the hill beautifully.  It made it glaringly obvious how little power my SUV has left in it.  2008 is the year that Dodge offered the SRT4 turbocharged engine, with 300 HP.  The particular car I drove did not have this, but if you want it, no problem, we have it!  The MPG is fantastic, too.  I drove this Dodge Caliber all over the Puget Sound area and at 30 MPG, didn’t need to stop at the gas station once.
If you drive in Washington, you know how crazy some of the other drivers can be.  With that in mind, it is reassuring that the safety of the Caliber and nine other Dodge vehicles is bar none the best that you can get.  It earned the highest rating in government frontal and side-impact crash test.  Side curtain airbags, multi stage driver and passenger airbags, knee blocker and side seat airbags had me and my passengers covered.

When consumers expressed what they wanted in a midsize SUV, Dodge didn’t roll over and ignore it.  The good people at Chrysler shot up, listened and produced.  Because of that, the Dodge Nitro recently won AutoPacific’s Vehicle Satisfaction Award.

This Award is an industry standard for gauging how satisfied an owner is with their new automobile purchase.  This study by the Southern California-based automotive research firm summarizes the results of over 42,000 new vehicle owners.

Dodge has also announced that the Challenger, a popular Dodge car for Seattle drivers, has set a monthly sales record.

Chrysler Group LLC as a whole reported a U.S. sales increase of 25 percent, the best year-over-year percentage sales improvement for the company in almost five years. In addition, the company continued its trend of month-over-month sales increases in 2010, up 3 percent versus March 2010.

“April was a very positive month for Chrysler Group, with concrete results that highlight the company is on-track and gaining momentum,” said Fred Diaz, President and Chief Executive Officer – Ram Truck Brand and Lead Executive for the Sales Organization. “Today we reported sales increased 25 percent compared with April 2009, building on the news from April 21 that the company posted an operating profit of $143 million for the first quarter 2010.”

Dodge Grand Caravan sales improved 56 percent compared with the same time period last year and Dodge Avenger slaes increased by triple digit percentages versus April 2009. Seattle Dodge dealer Rairdon also reports that Dodge Caliber sales were up 44 percent compared with last year.

“With competitively priced vehicles that customers want to purchase, the company was able to reduce incentive spending compared with last year, while posting improved sales,” said Diaz. “But we aren’t resting on this month’s results. We are hungry to continue building on the sales improvements – we are just getting started.”

Here’s how the whole thing went down!!

Allegedly, Smokey Point DCJ sent 2 new sales guys down to “act like they were picking up a car to sell at Smokey”.  When they were departing, one of the salesmen snuck upstairs and hid under a table while the other one “left”.  When the crew was departing Monroe for the evening, they noticed a suspicious car parked around the corner and decided to investigate. 

Upon interrogation by the Monroe DCJ crew and the Monroe police they went back to the store and the plot unfolded when they found the second salesman hiding upstairs.

Both were taken into custody while the investigation took place but were released back to their store by the Monroe police.
